In Memoriam (Spanish)
Prof. Eduardo Silva unexpectedly passed away on October 31, 2013. Professor Silva was an important part of our community, a brilliant researcher, and outstanding teacher that earned the respect and admiration of his students and colleagues alike. He will be dearly missed. Eduardo Silva was born in Valdivia, Chile, in 1979. He completed his primary and secondary education at Colegio Alemán Anwandter, in Valdivia. In 1997 he entered the Electronic Engineering program at Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María, graduating and obtaining the MS in Electronic Engineering Sciences in 2004. Between 2004 and 2006 he worked as a research assistant at the same university. He went to Australia in 2006 and in 2008 he received the Ph. D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Newcastle, under the supervision of Prof. Graham C. Goodwin. In recognition to his outstanding academic performance, he was supported by scholarships during all his undergraduate and graduate studies. In November 2008 he became a researcher at UTFSM, until he was hired as an Associate Professor in the Department of Electronic Engineering, in March 2013. He lectured courses in the areas of electrical networks, automatic control, random processes. He made significant research contributions in multivariable control systems and networked control systems. The quality of his teaching has been widely recognized by his students, and his scientific contributions have been published in the best journals in his research field. Eduardo's work was remarkable for his intensity, rigor, creativity and his ability to focus on specific topics. In all the expressions of his work, he earned the respect, and admiration of his students and colleagues. He was a brilliant researcher, building collaborative relationships with renowned scientists in Australia, Belgium, Hong-Kong and Denmark. Eduardo married Andrea Karstulovic in 2005 and they had two children. He was a reserved man, always generous and kind with others. He stood out for his high moral standards and for his gentle and friendly attitude. He was known for his love for literature and music, which he regularly played. He was especially fond of cinema, exotic cuisine and good beer. His sudden departure, on October 31, 2013, was an immeasurably loss for his family, friends, colleagues, students, and the USM community as a whole. Eduardo will be forever remembered by all those who had the privilege of sharing part of their lives with him, and he remains alive in through those very many whose lives contributed to shape. |
