Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María
Universidad Técnica Federico Santa Maria (USM) is a private research university founded in 1931 in Valparaiso, Chile. The University has a strong emphasis on scientific and technological education, as well as research. USM is consistently ranked among the top three engineering schools of the country; Even though it only offers degrees in engineering, science and technology, USM was ranked as the third best overall university in Chile in 2013. USM is currently ranked #1 research institution in Electrical and Computer Engineering in South America by Microsoft Academic (link). The University has campuses in several Chilean cities such as Valparaiso, Viña del Mar, Santiago, Talcahuano, and Rancagua, as well as in Guayaquil, Ecuador. Its majestic main campus between Valparaiso and Viña del Mar features a Victorian Gothic style overlooking the Pacific Ocean and is considered one of the foremost works of Chilean architecture. USM was the first Chilean university to confer a Doctorate in engineering, in 1963. The university takes its name from Federico Santa María, a Chilean who worked as a broker in the sugar market in Paris. In his will, Santa María donated all his fortune to build a high-standard technical and scientific institution in Valparaíso, his hometown. The University opened its doors in 1931 and took its current name in 1935. Learn more about USM, Chile, and Valparaiso from the International Affairs Office (virtual tour).
